Estimates only. Assumptions are listed below, and you can change every input.

Most studios price a class pack by taking the drop-in rate, knocking a round percentage off, and hoping the number works. That skips two things that decide whether packs actually make money: what each attended class costs you to deliver, and the share of credits that quietly expire without being used. Get those wrong and a pack that looks like a bargain for members can be a loss for the studio, or the other way around.

This calculator starts from your drop-in price and pack discount to set the pack price and the price per credit. It then subtracts your variable cost for every credit you expect to be redeemed, using the breakage rate you enter, to show the effective revenue per attended class and the contribution margin on the whole pack. Every number comes from your inputs. There are no hidden industry averages, so the estimate is only as good as the costs and breakage rate you type in.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter your current drop-in price and the number of credits you want in the pack.
  2. Set the discount you want pack buyers to get, then add what an attended class costs you in instructor pay, supplies and card fees.
  3. Enter the share of credits that historically expire unused, then read the pack price, price per credit, revenue per attended class and contribution margin.

What the math assumes

  • Pack price equals the drop-in price times the number of credits, reduced by the pack discount you enter. No rounding to a marketing price like $199 is applied.
  • The breakage rate you enter is the share of credits that will never be redeemed. Unredeemed credits carry no variable cost, which is why revenue per attended class rises as breakage rises.
  • Variable cost per attended class is treated as fully variable. Fixed costs such as rent, insurance and software are not included, so the margin shown is a contribution margin, not net profit.
  • Sales tax, refunds and chargebacks are ignored. If you owe sales tax on packs, subtract it from the pack price before comparing to costs.
  • All defaults are placeholders, not benchmarks. Replace them with your own drop-in rate, costs and redemption history.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the effective revenue per attended class come out higher than the price per credit?

Because some credits expire unused. The studio keeps the money for every credit sold but only delivers a class for the ones that are redeemed, so the revenue per class actually taught is higher than the price per credit. Set breakage to 0 to see the two numbers match.

What should I include in variable cost per attended class?

Anything you spend only because a member showed up: the per-head share of instructor pay if you pay per attendee, consumables like towels or mats, and the card processing fee on that portion of the pack. Rent and salaries are fixed and belong outside this calculator.

Is a higher breakage rate good for the studio?

It raises margin on paper, but credits that expire unused are also the biggest source of member complaints and refund requests. Most studios do better with a modest, clearly communicated expiry window and a breakage rate they can defend than with a high one that erodes trust.
